Things to do in Monterey with Kids
Monterey is the perfect family getaway for anyone who loves sun, sea, sand, good food and a great time! You’ll find stunning scenery and so many things to do in Monterey, including activities for kids, adults and the entire family. We are lucky enough to live just a few hours away from beautiful Monterey and get to experience all it has to offer several times a year.
Here are our favorite things to do in Monterey with kids:
1. Dennis the Menace Playground
Our kids’ favorite playground in the entire world! This park has been around since the 1950’s and holds a special place in the heart of this community. It’s huge and has so many fun features!
2. Monterey Bay Aquarium
This huge aquarium is one of the most famous in the world! It’s not cheap, but worth the visit! My kids love the jellyfish best.
3. Drive Highway 1
Driving anywhere along the iconic highway 1 in California is amazing, but this particular stretch just south of Monterey is gorgeous. Drive with the windows open! Be sure to stop for a picture of the breath-taking Bixby Bridge.

4. Carmel Mission
Get your daily dose of California history at the Carmel Mission, where you can step back into time and experience life as the Spanish missionaries did in the late 1700’s when they came to California as missionaries. Father Junipero Serra is buried here. There is a beautiful fountain and courtyard as well as interpretive exhibits.
5. Carmel-by-the-Sea
This quaint little town will feel like a little European village on the California coast. It has a beautiful beach and fun little shops, including a candy shop you can’t miss with the kids!
6. Pacific Grove
Visit the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary and the lighthouse in this quaint little town just north of Monterey.
7. Fisherman’s Wharf
Watch the seals and grab a bite to eat! Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey is a fun place to let the kids run around and see some wild sea life close-up!
8. Go to the Beach
Don’t skip a trip to the beach! It’s one of the best and free things to do in Monterey!
9. Big Sur
The drive to Big Sur is beautiful and Big Sur Station is a cute little town nestled in a redwood forest. Hike or picnic in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.

10. 17 Mile Drive
One of the most iconic drives in all of California, 17-mile drive is just that: a 17 drive along the coast with the most beautiful views of coastline and mansions.
Day Trips from Monterey
There are lots of great day trips you can take from Monterey, like Yosemite, San Francisco, and Sequoia National Park.
